EU governments should stop Facebook changing people’s privacy settings

facebook_privacyWhat Facebook is doing with privacy settings is not legal. According to EU regulation, you have to be asked if you want to share your personal data. This can not be a default setting, as Facebook is doing, so that most people won’t really notice that they are transforming their Facebook profile into a public blog.

I think EU governments should stop Facebook doing this, as this social network is widely used in Europe. Even if it is based in the US, where privacy regulations as not as hard as Europe’s, Facebook has local offices in many European countries. Besides, users should start boycotting Facebook, as this is not a very user-oriented change. Internet righst organization EFF is also not very happy about this.

Facebook is probably doing this as a way to get more advertising revenues, which is not the nicest thing it could for its users. There are already plenty of groups on Facebook which you can join to complain. “Bring back privacy settings!” has 30,000 members.

And this is my advice:
– Hide your friends’ list: Go to your profile page and Click on “Pencil” that appears on your friends box and uncheck “Show my friends on my profile”. Click on “Done”.

– Hide your profile wall: Go to profile, where you share what’s on your mind, you will see the “Lock” Icon. Click on it and then choose who can view your wall. Click on “Done”.
