CEO of Spain’s largest online newspaper gets hired by the main social network

koro_castellanoThis news is getting journalists really worried in Spain. Koro Castellano, the Madrid-born CEO of El Mundo, the main Spanish online newspaper, is leaving her job as she got hired by Tuenti, the main social network from Spain. This shows a clear change in the online business: news for social networks.

Castellano had been working for El Mundo for the last 9 years. This has spared a lot of expectations in the online advertising market in Spain, as specialists realize that online newspapers are dropping their revenues while social networks increase them. It’s a clear sign of a changing trend and shows that social media are a better business: while producing news is very expensive, users create content for free on social networks.

Tuenti is the number one network among people under 25, while Facebook is since last year the largest social network in Spain. Tuenti was founded by Zaryn Dentzel and Kenny Bently, two Americans who got to know social networks in the US before flying to Spain. Curiously, the company is partly owned by the Polanco family, also related to Spain’s second largest online newspaper, El País.
