Twitter is hype (as blogging was 2 years ago)

One of the things everybody agrees on here in the Valley is that Twitter is a hype and it won’t be so popular for ever. It’s true that there is a lot of creativity among people who build apps with its API and it is pushing other Internet players to do more real time things. But Twitter is not as big as it looks like lately.

In fact, young people don’t use Twitter as much as could be expected. Facebook (and Tuenti in Spain) is the king among people under 20. At the same time, there are more and more twitter user who stopped using it after a while. Twitter is only good for some people.

We talked about this and many other things during the Online Community Roundtable, which was held at the Yahoo! offices in Sunnyvale. Around 20 people meet every month at this roundtable. They eat pizza and later start discussing on any subject related to online communities which anybody brings to the table.

For example, last week I suggested that blogging as a marketing tool was dead. Most people did not agree. It was clear that blogging does not always create communities. In fact, when it does not, it has become more media than real blogging. Most people also thought that blogging had been too hype (as twitter is now) and that it is now becoming what it really should be.

Bill Johnston, the organizer of this meetup, explains in this video how it works:
